Three Brazilian Gems You've Never Heard of
Insider tips from Huffman Travel Advisor Samantha Lanna
Explore Mato Grosso do Sul, snorkel in the clear blue rivers filtered by the limestone of Bonito, and head to Pantanal (the largest wetland plain on the planet) for a unique safari, to spot the Brazilian jaguar and other wildlife such as caiman, capybara, macaws, tapirs, anteaters, giant river otters, and a vast array of bird life.
Insider tip: Love to snorkel? Enjoy Bonito’s rivers, such as the Prata, a freshwater version of the Caribbean, where aquatic plants stand in for coral and teem with rainbows of fish.
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is a true unknown gem and one of the most amazing natural wonders with the largest field of sand dunes in South America. Enjoy 30 miles of deserted beaches (riding dune buggies is a must!) and swim in the seasonal lagoons! Every year during rainy season (January to June), the dunes collect rainwater and, as a result, these dunes become temporary pools full of clear, warm water.
Insider tip: Visit from June to the end of August for the best chance of full lagoons.
Fernando de Noronha is a picturesque Archipelago considered a paradise for beach lovers. It is a protected marine park and ecological sanctuary renowned for its pristine, crystal-clear waters, beaches with beautiful sand, fantastic scuba diving and snorkeling, and rich marine wildlife (swim with the friendly sharks!). Only 500 people are allowed on the island every day to preserve the island's landscapes and ecosystems.
Insider tip: Head there for an epic New Year's celebration that lasts for an entire week!
