The winter holidays are filled with family traditions and making memories. But have you ever thought about ditching the usual seasonal celebrations and going somewhere a little more out of the (gift) box? There are many spectacular places to visit during the holidays, from spending Christmas at a winter wonderland in Dubai to feeling the holiday spirit at Pase del Nino (a Christmas Eve parade re-enacting the Nativity) in Galapagos to witnessing the dazzling celestial fireworks in Reykjavik on New Year's Eve.

Cotswolds

For a wholesome and refreshing Yule, head to the quaint, timeless beauty and breathtaking landscapes of the Cotswolds. Enjoy bustling Christmas markets, beautifully decorated manor houses, a hearty holiday meal at a country inn, and a stay at one of our favorite properties, The Newt in Somerset. There, you can enjoy garden tours, cider tastings, deer park walks, interactive museums, a revitalizing spa, holiday feasting, and adventures in its beautiful gardens and local wildlife.

Iceland

December is one of the best times to visit Iceland due to the excellent conditions for viewing the northern lights and the festive spirit of the holidays. Crowds gather to see the great Oslo Christmas Tree light up at Austurvollur Square in Reykjavík to signal the start of the Christmas season. Unlike Jolly Santa, Yule Lads (13 scary-looking brothers from the mountains) walk around town putting presents in children's shoes. For visitors, New Year's Eve is a not-to-be-missed epic night where thousands of people take to the streets to watch a larger-than-life fireworks show!

Dubai

Although Dubai may not be the first image that comes to mind when considering traditional Christmas travel, it offers plenty of "over-the-top" end-of-year cheer! The city, known for its skyscrapers and highest level of luxury, transforms into a dazzling winter wonderland during the holiday season. Dubai sparkles with extravagant light displays, larger-than-life Christmas trees, streets lined with festive lights, installations of luminous reindeer, and giant snowmen, all to remind you that Santa's sleigh goes global. There is much to do, from Christmas day brunches and festive afternoon teas to Christmas markets and sunset picnics on the beach.

Marrakech

Although Muslims account for about 99% of Morocco's population, Christmas in Marrakech can be a magical experience! The city is in full swing, and there are plenty of decorations in shopping malls and boutiques, all open during Christmas. In addition, the souks and galleries are bustling. There are Christmas services at the Protestant and Catholic churches in Gueliz, a modern French district with primarily foreign residents. To complete your holiday in Marrakech, celebrate with a spectacular meal on Christmas Eve. Oh, and the weather is perfect!

Tokyo

Visiting this thriving metropolis during the winter holidays can be amazing with the giant Christmas trees and millions of colorful LED lights wrapped around trees and buildings (a.k.a. Illuminations), turning Tokyo into a sparkling wonderland. Additional perks include celebrating Christmas Day with a festive meal and a last-minute shopping spree, as everything is open! In addition, there are Christmas markets galore, the annual Setagaya Boroichi flea market, fireworks, and counting down to the New Year at a shrine or temple. Of course, you can elevate your winter holiday with a fabulous trip to one of the nearby ski resorts.

Langkawi, Malaysia

Prepare for a treat if you find yourself in Langkawi during the Christmas holidays! Visit the pristine shores of Pantai Cenang for a Langkawi-style Christmas Eve beach bash with locals and travelers alike. Imagine festive decorations, live music, and dancing while the soft sand sits beneath your feet and the waves crash inches from you. If connecting with Mother Nature is more alluring than Father Christmas, nestled on the northwestern tip of Malaysia's Langkawi Island, The Datai Langkawi stands as one of the world's most captivating resorts. The iconic resort can be the holiday enchantment you seek with its ancient rainforest teeming with wildlife. It offers breathtaking views of the serene Datai Bay, recognized by National Geographic as one of the planet's top 10 beaches.

Galapagos Islands

Christmas is the most celebrated holiday in the Galapagos Islands. There are many religious celebrations, such as Novena (a nine-day prayer ceremony leading up to Christmas), Pase del Nino (an all-day parade), and Misa de Gallo (a midnight mass on Christmas Eve). Even though snow is never on the forecast, Santa still visits, albeit on sea lions instead of reindeer! Swap out your mulled wine and eggnog for Canelazo. Another unique opportunity during the holidays is that it's the best time of year to see many indigenous birds and participate in the Darwin Foundation's annual Christmas Bird Count.

Belize

Belize's diverse cultural heritage is on full display during Christmas, with traditional customs and celebrations reflecting the country's mix of Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, and Creole influences. During your vacation, you may witness unique holiday traditions such as reenactments of the Nativity story, Christmas pageants, parades, and cultural performances. Belize is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and islands in the Caribbean, making it an ideal destination for a tropical Christmas getaway. Relax on sandy shores, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy water sports such as snorkeling, diving, kayaking, and sailing.

Palm Springs

Traveling to California's Palm Springs during the winter holidays guarantees exceptional golf nestled in the sunshine of the Coachella Valley. Often called the "golf capital of the world," Palm Springs has more than 130 courses, great hiking, and beautiful views, making it an excellent option for a holiday golf vacation! There are also plenty of off-the-course adventures to enjoy, including countless seasonal festivities like the City of La Quinta's annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, The "Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade," chestnut roasting and holiday movies on the lawn at La Quinta Resort, and a multitude of delicious restaurants to enjoy!
