Unlocking Human Spaceflights: Your Invitation to the Ultimate Adventure

In an era where the boundaries of exploration continue to expand, last weekend marked a historic moment as Virgin Galactic soared into the skies for its seventh flight, this time with a crew of six—including three lucky civilians like you and me. Just a month ago, I was invited behind the security gate at Cape Canaveral, privy to an exclusive astronaut orientation. This rare opportunity granted our team an immersive glimpse into the realm of commercial human spaceflight. Should you be curious about space, please know we can guide you toward which program is best for you and how to approach it.

A highlight of my journey was a mind-blowing virtual reality experiment, courtesy of Orbite, which transported us aboard the vessels of three leading space operators: Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. As I reclined in a beach chair, enveloped in a sensory simulation, the sensation of space travel became palpable. The sights, the sounds, the weightless serenity—all meticulously recreated to offer a tantalizing taste of the cosmic frontier. Our narrator would comment on the Gs we were feeling, the speed, "main engine off," and then turned silent when came the Overview Effect–that moment where you gaze at the earth from above, in pure awe. It was like a sneak peek into the future of travel.

My personal trajectory—from a childhood aversion to flying to a newfound curiosity for rocket-bound adventures—underscores the transformative power of education and a deep love for exploring the unknown.

To truly appreciate the importance of human spaceflight, it's crucial first to comprehend the underlying reasons for venturing into space. As nations worldwide allocate significant resources to space exploration, it becomes evident that there are three key objectives driving these endeavors.

  1. Protecting our home sweet home—Earth. Think climate monitoring, tracking pollution, and keeping an eye on any near-Earth objects (asteroids) that might come our way.

  2. Pushing the boundaries of science and medicine. Did you know that experiments conducted in space can help us tackle health problems here on Earth? Similarly, solar panels, insulation, and water filtration are all inherited from space programs.

  3. Bringing us all together. Space exploration is about advancing international cooperation, bridging communications, and inspiring future generations to reach for the stars.

Human spaceflights, in particular, captivate and inspire like no other. The spectacle of a rocket ascending, bearing individuals on an extraordinary journey, evokes a collective sense of wonder and awe. It's the kind of thing that makes people stop in their tracks, pull over on the highway, and start clapping.

Remarkably, the opportunity to secure a seat on suborbital and orbital spaceflights is no longer science fiction. From approachable voyages reminiscent of hot-air-balloon flights to adrenaline-fueled jaunts aboard SpaceX's formidable rockets, a spectrum of odysseys awaits. For the true scientific minds among us, you can also secure a spot on the ISS (International Space Station). Soon, private space stations are set to emerge as the ultimate cosmic retreats, offering unparalleled vistas and zero-gravity escapades.

These are no ordinary trips; these are the next Svalbard, Mongolia, South Pole: places none of your friends may have visited or thought were within reach, or interesting. Much like preparing for a marathon or to climb Mount Everest, space travel demands rigorous training and preparation. While programs offered by Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin require only days of instruction, SpaceX's missions entail up to 6 weeks of intensive groundwork. Family involvement is also key, as loved ones partake in comprehensive safety briefings to calm any apprehensions and share in the anticipation of your extraordinary voyage.

Contrary to rockets launching satellites, human spaceflights carry humans. During my stay at Cape Canaveral, the human element loomed large. Every encounter—be it with seasoned astronauts, dedicated trainers, or the crew up top the launch tower of pad 39A—underscored the profound responsibility inherent in space exploration: ensuring the safe return home of every astronaut. It was profoundly emotional.

Meanwhile, here on Earth, Orbite is democratizing access to astronaut-like training. While building their Philippe Starck-designed campus and luxury hotels in Cape Canaveral, the startup offers short-term programs immersing participants in astronaut training regimes, culinary space adventures with the Ducasse team, flights both with zero gravity planes and fighter jets, mindfulness sessions led by NASA-trained mental health coaches, and much more. The best part is that you do not have to be tempted by a spaceflight to join: the programs are open to anyone with a thirst for adventure and self-discovery. Current programs are planned in Paris, Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, and Antarctica.

As we gaze toward the horizon of commercial human spaceflight, the inconceivable truly becomes reality. Discussions of private charters to the back of the moon in 10 nights (horizon 2029) felt like designing a yacht itinerary in the Med! While my own ticket to space remains pending, I eagerly anticipate my education ahead with Orbite and have rounded up some of the most captivating space (or space-adjacent) missions to ignite your wanderlust and propel you toward the next frontier of discovery. Please don't hesitate to reach out to discuss these!
