TONY HUFFMAN

A Taste of Turkey

Sharing two weeks in Turkey with our entire family of 10 to celebrate a special occasion was probably the most memorable trip we have ever experienced. Five days touring Istanbul, experiencing superb Ottoman cuisine, boat rides on the Bosphorus, and of course, the smells and the hustle and bustle of the bazaars. All this was followed by a day at the ruins of Ephesus, walking in the footprints of the Romans and Jesus, something our grandchildren will always remember. We ended our journey on a private Turkish-style yacht (gulet) for a 7-day sail along the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of Turkey.

African Safari in Tanzania

When our two daughters were still in college, we took them to Tanzania for a 10-day tented safari. This was before the days of the luxury camps and lodges (which are GREAT), so we had mobile tents and moved to three different locations within the Tanzanian Serengeti National Park. Our tents had simple beds, no electricity, and the toilet and showers outside in separate tents. Shaving in the morning with warm water poured from a tin pitcher rounded out the scene. All of this “roughing it,” was rewarded by world-class food and animal viewing. We would spend about four hours driving through the park twice a day to view the animals. The drives were broken up by a light lunch and a nap back at camp. To this day, the girls tell us that was the best vacation the four of us ever had together.

The Magic of New Zealand

If ever I was forced to leave the USA, please send me to New Zealand! A country of only five million people spread over a vast, beautiful area in the South Pacific. The country is heavily influenced by its native Maori people and their culture, and you can see signs everywhere. Fundamentally, there is the North Island and the South Island, with very different terrains and weather. Remember, being in the Southern Hemisphere, their summer is our winter. Our last trip to New Zealand was in April, their fall and the beginning of the tourist “low season.” Crowds were less, as were lodging costs. New Zealand is known for its luxury, small country lodges where we dined and wined daily. Among many memorable experiences was visiting a Maori meeting house followed by a typical New Zealand cookout, where the food is cooked in an underground charcoal pit for hours before removing the food and serving it fast and hot. This destination is for “active” travelers; however, plan some downtime to enjoy the people. This is definitely a country to visit more than once. Expect to spend a minimum of 14 days on this adventure.

St. Barths

Saint-Barthélemy (a.k.a St. Bart or St. Barths) is one of the most magnificent Caribbean vacations I have experienced. The stunning beaches, blue waters, amazing dining, and Rosé all day put this at the top of my most memorable experiences. Our group took a half-day guided hike. To be honest, this excursion was incredibly challenging, but once we reached the top, the scenery was worth every bead of sweat it took me to get there. I love the combination of French sophistication (the official language is French) and laidback Caribbean vibes, making for a perfect island getaway. I can’t wait to go back!

Ireland

Ireland has to be one of the most beautiful, relaxing, scenic places I have visited. The people of Ireland are so welcoming, along with the unique history, music, and culture. One of the most memorable moments was when my husband and I had a photo shoot at Temple Bar so we could cherish this trip forever!
