There has never been a better time to visit Istanbul, the exotic, chic, and urban metropolis that straddles Europe and Asia along the Bosphorus Strait. With a major downturn in tourism in 2016, visitors will find exceptional value, but what will truly captivate them is the rich culture, deep history, and above all, the warm hospitality of the people.

Why Istanbul Holds a Special Place in My Heart

My late wife and I had the pleasure of living in Istanbul for over three years in the early 1970s, and the city has remained a part of us ever since. We return annually, drawn by its culture, history, and incredible people.

Before our latest visit in October, nearly three years had passed. Some advised against returning due to political concerns, yet we found Istanbul largely unchanged and completely safe.

We reconnected with Turkish friends, dined at our favorite Ottoman restaurants, indulged in shopping sprees, and enjoyed the world-class service of Istanbul’s finest hotels.

This time, we stayed at the Four Seasons Bosphorus, where our room in the palace section provided breathtaking views across the sea to the Asian side of Istanbul.

With pleasant weather almost year-round, spring and fall are the best times to visit. We were lucky to experience Turkey’s Republic Day on October 29, when the city was alive with celebrations and national pride.
