Ireland: Land of a Hundred Thousand Welcomes
by Jeff Hood, Luxury Travel Advisor
Ireland conjures images of quilted green pastures, rainbows at every horizon, cozy pubs, and pints of Guinness. And while I won’t deny that I enjoyed all of those on my recent trip through Ireland, what I also found was a modern country rooted deep in tradition, very proud of its rich heritage and unique culture. Ireland really knows how to bring its very raw natural destination to life, leaving no experience unimagined for travelers looking for true luxury and authenticity.
In the capital city of Dublin, regardless of where you stay, you will find yourself right at home in this welcoming city. You would be remiss if you didn’t make time to stroll the famous Grafton Street shopping district, marvel at the iconic colorful Georgian doors or visit Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College and the Book of Kells. The serenity of St. Stephens Green park is a welcome contrast to the buzz of the rest of the city. From history, to sport, to art, culture, fine dining or simply blending in with the locals in the neighborhood pub, Dublin offers something for everyone.
After some wonderful experiences in Dublin, I suggest you journey south. County Cork could be a complete destination within itself! Venture along the coastline from Cork City through Cobh and on to Kinsale to explore the southernmost point along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Exploding with culture, you’ll find music, dance, arts and crafts, and jaw-dropping coastal views that serve both the active tourist and the zen-seekers alike. Foodies will love this region with local organic produce at The English Market in Cork City on fresh-caught fish, served with chips in the fishing village of Kinsale (named the foodie capital of Ireland) or a full whiskey experience at the (Jameson) Midleton Distillery.
Moving along the southern coast, County Wexford offers some amazing day trips including a visit to Hook Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in the world; or a ferry ride over to Waterford to explore this true Viking city’s dark and heroic past. For those interested in the finer, shinier things, The House of Waterford Crystal is open for visitors who wish to indulge in a special treasure to take home.
For an exclusive experience, consider a day on a private boat on Lough Derg. Here, you will visit with town locals who welcome guests for fine dining and a bit of chat about the history of the lakeside home, the art within and surrounding, and the architectural significance of their private home.
County Kerry offers stunning coastal views, a beautiful national park, gorgeous lakes, a glacial canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and some of the friendliest towns in all of Ireland. Even though Killarney and Dingle have become quite popular tourist destinations, it is easy to blend with the locals for a pint, join a sing-along or catch an off-the-cuff traditional brush dance at one of the local pubs, a major authentic highlight on my trip!
A helicopter arrival is best for either a grand welcome or a final farewell to the Emerald Isle. The iconic Dromoland Castle, with all of its charm and grandeur, offers guests a very traditional experience just 15 minutes from the Shannon airport. The royal treatment comes with unimpeachable service. White-gloved waiters ensure quality in the main dining room and elegance at afternoon tea in the parlor. Everything from the modern pleasures of golf and spa treatments to the ancient arts of falconry or archery can be enjoyed onsite.
Not far south and only an half-an-hour drive from the airport, I took in the newly refurbished Adare Manor. Now open for guests, this manor estate is truly “beyond everything.” Best said in their own words: “A cherished heritage of hospitality has been distilled into the spirit of welcome you feel within these walls. Adare Manor was a labor of love from the very start, created to delight, astonish, and impress. That legacy is vividly alive in the manor house itself: sumptuously restored, brimming with Gothic splendor, and perfectly appointed in every detail. It is reflected by world-class staff whose personalized, intimate service centers you in the heart of the home.
From either Dromoland Castle or Adare Manor, a day trip to world-famous Cliffs of Moher is a must. Either by car to immerse yourself in the sheer majestic splendor, or by helicopter for a bird’s eye view of this natural wonder. I preferred the helicopter, of course!
After spending a magical eight “top of the mornings to you” in this wonderful country, I left feeling that Ireland has something to offer for everyone. A modern country with an old soul, its unique culture and heritage draw you in like a long-lost family member. Whether you enjoy epic landscapes, a cozy village pub, a scenic hike, a lesson in history in a medieval cathedral or afternoon tea in a Gothic manor, this destination is sure to bring your journey to life and live long in the memory as the trip of a lifetime!
